FLIPPING THE SCRIPT: BUILDING MODERN EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES

HOW EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES ARE LEARNING FROM THEIR STUDENTS TO PROVIDE MORE INNOVATIVE AND FLEXIBLE SERVICES, AVOIDING BECOMING OBSOLETE.

While there are many factors that inform the decision of which private or higher education institution to attend – all of which are unique to each individual – three major considerations are:

Technology and Learning Environment: We live in a wireless world where technology drives our daily lives, resulting in a huge demand for collaborative learning environments, research labs, online learning, and maker space. The future of learning relies more on practical application than content retention and firsthand experience rather than hypothetical circumstances.

Lifestyle: Traditional dorms are giving way to mixed use spaces, with the “hospitality model” encompassing living, dining, entertainment, and open workspace all under one roof. Ultimately, the end goal is to have lifestyle and learning environments intertwine, much like the work and home integration of the modern corporate world.

Affordability and Enrollment: Traditional students are no longer the majority of undergraduate degree seekers. Instead,it’s part-time or working adults. As such, many institutions like Northeastern University are opening satellite campuses in target locations that offer area-specific MBA programs that reflect the needs and interests of that community. For example, Silicon Valley focuses on business leadership and Seattle, healthcare and technology. This “learn where you live” model is making higher education more accessible and affordable for all prospective students.

As education models evolve, schools are upgrading outdated facilities and engaging in comprehensive campus planning. Rather than go it alone, rely on Senate Construction’s expertise in design and construction to guide you through the process.
